Digital Resiliency

Here is the link to the Langley School District Code of Conduct. My school does not have a separate code of conduct so we follow this one.

The 5 questions I would ask my school population (Kindergarten to Grade 5) would be:

1. What is bullying? What does bullying look like on the internet?

2. Where have you seen bullying online before?

3. What apps do you use on the internet? Do you feel that others are kind when you are online?

4. What can you do if you see something unkind while you are online?

5. What have you learned about being safe online from school or from your family?

  1. Hi Rachel, the Langley Code of Conduct is a lot more in depth than the Richmond one (https://sd38.bc.ca/sites/default/files/2019-12/policy_105_district_code_of_conduct.pdf) which is usually displayed in this poster (https://philslibraryblog.blogspot.com/2023/04/digital-resiliency.html). I feel that the longer Langley code of conduct is much less likely to be read all the way through by students. How do you feel?

  2. Rachel - You have several questions that echo the ones I developed. It was difficult to compose Qs that are probing yet open to responses. I was worried about students reading and retreating or eye-rolling. Maybe that reaction is not as common for your age group as for my teens.
The first two questions seem to cover similar ground. Do you anticipate different responses or might you combine #1 and #2?
I like what #5 is asking. What students are unsure where they've learned/acquired safe online behaviours or approaches? Might students be more open with responses if rephrased without requesting the source?

  3. Hi Navreen here. I think your questions are easy to understand and open-ended. I would probably combine questions 1 and 2 however, since they may elicit the same responses. For question 3- do you feel others are kind when you are online- perhaps the wording can be changed so that instead of students answering it with yes or no, they are able to provide examples.
