Virtual Classroom Connections

After looking through various options, I have decided on three virtual experiences that would be a good fit for my school (K-5 Elementary School).

1. Google Lit Trips

The idea of Google Lit trips is "where students become virtual traveling companions traveling right alongside characters in stories commonly taught in grades K-12." As students read the book, they follow the story locations mapped out on google earth. I think this would be a valuable field trip because a teacher can bring a class novel alive for their students and incorporate aspects of mapping, cultures and communities, geography and technology into a novel study. I think the use of Google Lit trips would be a valuable resource for my library.

2. Grouse Mountain Bear Cam

Through this live stream, students can watch the Grouse mountain bears, Grinder and Coola as they hibernate. This would be a good fit for my school because Grouse Mountain is close to home but a field trip there would be quite the undertaking. This way, students can make connections to a unit about animal adaptations and various discussions about how animals adapt in our ecosystem and observe an animal they wouldn't otherwise have a chance to see close up.

3. Science World Online School Programs

Science world offers a variety of 45 minute online workshops for students that are interactive with live demonstrations, experiments and activities. They also include resources that can continue learning afterwards. I think this is a great fit because Science World's virtual workshops all align with the BC Curriculum Big Ideas. I think these workshops would be an affordable and effective way to enhance any science unit.

  1. Hi Rachel, I have't seen Google Lit before but it looks like it could be really useful. For Grouse Mountain, I like the bearcams, but they also offer various virtual field trips themselves where their wildlife managers can talk to your class about various animals, including the bears which would also be a valuable experience: https://www.grousemountain.com/education-programs/online

  2. Nicole B-R: Great choices, I have used the Science World resources before they are great. They have a lot of great ones. I have even had a Science world instructor teach a coding lesson in my classroom, it was awesome the students and I learned a lot and it was free!
